Data for Development

Harnessing the power of data science for international development and humanitarian action

Included in the many sectors that stand to be, or have already been, transformed by the data revolution are those of international development and humanitarian response. As one of the first data scientists at the United Nations, I spent several years with both Global Pulse in the Secretary General's Office and with UNICEF Office of Innovation applying data science techniques to various development challenges. These have included epidemiology, constitutional change, migration and vaccine sentiment. Often the most valuable data resides with private companies, thus many of these projects have included partnerships with Google, Amadeus, Telefonica and others.
